Midterm Update

Summer Homework
I was able to fill up the entire sketch book, plus finish my giant canvas and the three smaller canvases, so I got as much done as was required, but I didn't do some ideas that I had and I should have.
Most of my designs in my sketchbook were really fun to do, and they turned out really nicely, but there were about 3 drawings that I didn't like, the one I really don't like is the newspaper one, I don't think I did a great job on it, and it doesn't look as cool as I thought it would. Other than that, I think it was rather successful.
I grew as an artist over the summer because I used a couple of new mediums and started to learn more about my preferred style of art. I like things to be simplistic, but have the appearance of detail, like my birch trees. I like doing things that have elements of repetition, but not using a stencil to copy the same shape like my feathers.
I believe I deserve an A because I put so much time and effort into all of my drawings and paintings, I don't think a single one took only 30 mins, maybe the newspaper one only took that long. Plus I did interesting earthy designs for the extra projects, which I think turned out really interesting.

Google Doodle
I am painting the Doodle 4 Google, probably on a medium canvas board.
For my doodle, I want to create a future world where genetical modifications got out of hand, and the vegetation took over the cities, so I'm painting giant trees entangling and destroying New York, with houses and roads built onto and into the giant trees. I'm only in the planning stage at the moment, I will begin painting soon.
My plan fits the design, because the theme is 'what do I see for the future?' And giant trees could be a future problem if something goes wrong with science experiments. It's really just a fantasy, but it would be an interesting future to live in giant trees.
I'm not sure how long it will take, it took me about half an hour to plan it all out, the painting will probably take a few days.
I'm not finished yet, so I can't be graded yet.

Repetition
I used acrylic on canvas board, and I'm adding details with a fine tipped sharpie. Plus I used my hands to paint, no brushes, so it was a fun project!
The background is a swirl of blues and a little bit of black. I have the sun, swirling orange, and the moon, purple and white, and I will be adding yellow and white stars soon. Currently, I am adding half-circle details to the moon, the sun will have spirals, and any of the stars will have a diamond pattern on them.
My repetition aspect in ny project is the repeating patterns, and the repetition of stars and celestial elements.
It's taken me about three hours so far, but I've had to wait for the paint to dry, and the details are going to take forever, so I'm not sure how much longer it will take.
I'm still not done with it, but by the time I am done, it should be A worthy!

Cards
I did three different cards, the seven of spades, two of clovers, and the three of diamonds. For the spades, I used a collage of fabric, for the daimonds, I used water color, and for the clovers I used a combination of acrylic, water color, and salt.
The spades card I made into a dragonfly, which took a very long time and was a little frustrating because I've never worked with fabric for an art project before, and I got thread and fuzz all over the place, which was anoying with the glue. But it turned out to be a really interesting card. Then the diamond card is my favourite, it has three poppies on it, and three green diamonds to look like leaves. The clover card is two trees, an autumn and winter tree, with an interesting background. The bottoms of each tree has piles, the winter one has snow and the autumn one has leaves.
These took me about seven hours, one for the poppies, two for the trees, and about four for the dragonfly.

Extra
I painted an owl on a wood textured background, which I had a lot of fun with. The background I painted without brushes, but the owl I used brushes. It was the first time I painted an owl, and I'm actually really proud of it, I think it looks cute.
I also used some water color to create some fun background paper, but I'm not sure what to do with them now.
Another fun thing I did was create an abstract background using a range of contrasting colors, I also have no idea what to do with it, but I love it.

AP Paintings

I'm going to make this a super long post and just put all of my paintings up at once, starting with the themed ones and ending with the not so in-themed ones.

 Tropical Sea
Acrylic paint on 46"x28" canvas
The background is made up of two reds and a yellow, I used my hands to blend the background, which was super fun! There's a few black shadows through the piece. On the left there's half an island with trees, and a turtle. In the middle is a ship, next to that are dolphins and another island. Then on the right there's a suggestion of a beach.
This piece fits my theme as it's a ship surrounded by the tropical aspects.
It probably took me about three or four class periods to make, it's the biggest painting I've ever done.

String Anchor
String tied on nails on a board painted with acrylics
Blue background with white string on nails raised above the board a bit.
This was my first piece having to do with my nautical theme.
This one probably took three class periods, one for the paint, one for the nails and one for the string.

String Ship Wheel
Same materials as the anchor.
Same colours as before, this was my second piece and made it to match the anchor in a set.
This one took me a little longer, I was missed a few areas of string and then ran out a few times, so actually putting the string on took about a class and a half.

Dark Island
Acrylic on canvas board
Blues and greens blended together for the background and black shadows of an island and three palm trees. The background turned out darker than I wanted it to be, but I still liked how it turned out.
This is another tropical theme, which fits in with the nautical theme even though it's not a ship.
This one only took me two class periods, it isn't a very big painting, so it didn't take long to cover it with paint and add details.

Ohana
Acrylic on canvas board.
Minimalist version of Stitch from the Disney movie with stenciled Hawaiian flowers. There are a few leaves and swirls at the bottom, and the word 'ohana' underneath Stitch.
This took me about three class periods, not including the time to make the stencil for it.
This one doesn't really fit in with my theme, but it is kind of tropical. That's what my theme should have been, tropical instead of nautical.

Flower Stencil
Paper cut with an exacto knife.
I made this stencil for the Ohana painting.
This only took me five minutes to make, and it doesn't fit into my theme.

Unfinished
I planned on having this one have a moon with a ship sailing into the distance, but I wasn't able to finish it.

 Collection of Coasters
I made these on small canvas boards with paint, and none of them apply to my theme, but I thought they looked cute so I'm keeping them here.

Cloudy Pink
I made this before I decided on a theme, and I really loved how it turned out. I don't know what to do with it now, but I will keep it in mind for something to do next year.

Mountain Sunset
Acrylic on canvas
This is my last painting of the year. I have to paint a face on it still, but I really like how it turned out. I think I might do more paintings like this next year.

AP Studio Art

I got to have a taste of what  AP Studio Art is all about this year, it's a two semester class, but I only got to take it the second semester.

So I was kind of just learning the ropes, so I don't have a whole lot of paintings from this semester, and most of them are off topic. My original proposal was to create 3D string art pieces of ships and other nautical themes. That, however, didn't pan out so well. I sprained my ankle pretty badly right before spring break, and I know that it's a lame excuse, but the way  I was making my pieces was hurting my ankle really badly. I thought I would just take a break and get back to it, but I ended up not starting again.

My theme stayed the same, but my medium changed. I did not get as much done as I had hoped, I had never had the freedom to do what I wanted to do in a class before this, so I was very much at a loss as to what I was supposed to do. I spent the first few weeks being shy and not knowing where anything was and wondering what I could use and what I wasn't allowed to uses, so I could have spent my time more wisely. There were a few paintings that I started and never finished, and that makes me sad, but I can always finish them over the summer.

I believe that as a first semester, I was successful. I learned how to stretch my own canvas, which is super useful, and I was able to create some interesting pieces. It was weird at first to create my own subjects, I am so used to painting according to a project assigned by a teacher, so this experience has really boosted my confidence in my abilities to be creative and make something from nothing.

OCTOPUS

Ok, NOW we get to my 2D stuff.

This is an oil painting of the giant pacific octopus, a truly magnificent creature.

I have to say, oil takes FOREVER to dry, and silly me decided to do a background before actually painting the octopus, so this took me a few weeks. I'll get better with oil eventually, once I actually get some nice oil paints instead of the cheap ones.

Blue and White Heart

I'll admit, I've been a bit obsessed with hearts recently.

This is just a tiny heart dish I made for fun.

That cracked glass effect is actually a really cool process done with chunks of class! I arranged four (I think) little glass pebbles inside the bowl and fired it on a glaze fire! The more glass you put, the more cracks it makes!

Metal Heart

This is my absolute favorite thing that I have done with ceramics. I made a semi-anatomically correct heart and glazed it with a metallic glaze!

I plan to make this into a series, so I will be making at least two more very soon!

My Shells!

Ah yes, all of my little shells.

Oh and that last one is supposed to be a jellyfish top, I was going to add ribbon for the tentacles, just haven't found the right ribbon yet.

I made these out of porcelain and used slip to make the textures. These were so much fun to make, I really liked shaping them and adding the textures.

Tiny Mask

This was really just for fun.

This mask is about as long as my finger, so not very big, but I think it's super cute.

I actually used metal for the nose ring, which was a fun experiment. I forgot exactly what those are, but they're used in the construction of the kiln so they're meant to withstand the temperatures without melting or bending.

First Mask

This was the very first mask I made,

What's weird about this one is that at first, the brown marks were green. Even after the first firing, they were green, they only turned brown after I put the clear glaze over it and glaze fired it.

But hey, still a cool composition, if I do say so myself! I really would have liked that green color there, but the brown still works with it.

Experimentation!!

I found a few shells on the beach, and decided to see how the kiln would affect them.

This is what it looked like after being fired, however after a few weeks the remainder of the shells deteriorated into a powder. All except for a tiny shell that was accidentally covered in glaze.

It was a fun experiment, but now I have no idea what to do with it.

Best Friend Bowl

This is the biggest bowl I've ever made.

Sounds impressive, riiiiight? Welp, it's not so big. It fits very comfortably in the palm of my hand, which if you know me, you know isn't big at all.

This is the first time I painted a design with glaze, and I have to say I like the way it turned out.

Greenish Mask

So. This mask.

Not exactly what I had in mind when I made it, but I still really love the way it turned out. Instead of using a glaze for this mask's color, I used a stain and then a clear glaze over the top to make it shiny.

Brown Mask

Alright, so I don't do the whole, name your piece thing, so I can't title these by name.

This is one of the four masks that I made this year. This is one of my favorite masks I've made, the colors remind me of petrified wood!
Hi there!

I originally started up my blog freshman year as a class assignment, but never got around to actually posting any artwork. I've been doing a ton of art lately in my sketchbooks and thought it would be a great idea to finally start posting them!

Not only that, I've also taken up ceramics and other 3D art, so I would like to start posting my work here! This will be the first time that I get to do a years worth of art for almost the entire day, so I'm super stoked! I haven't gotten many works done because I started working on a larger project, (which will be posted later) but I'm really enjoying it, and I hope you do too!
